A nurse from Pitt County, who was in Haiti when the earthquake hit, is back home in eastern Carolina.
Michele Keen was on her yearly mission trip to Haiti. She returned to her home in Bethel on Saturday because the military ordered her and others to leave.
Since then, the PCMH nurse says she's been thinking only of the people she had to leave behind. She says the night of the quake, Haitians just poured into the camp where she and 48 American doctors and contractors stayed. She says they were not prepared to provide trauma care to patients, but because of the need, she says everyone pitched in to help.
Keen says the Haitian people are resilient, even those not seriously injured would help those worse off. She says she plans to go back within the next six months.
