NC ABC Commission Wants More Info On Paid Meals

North Carolina's top alcohol regulators want more information about meals for local ABC employees that may have been paid for by a liquor company.

The State Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission said Friday it wants additional expense receipts from Diageo North America by next week.

State agents investigated a $12,700 dinner that Diageo paid for in November for 30 Mecklenburg County ABC employees, spouses and other guests. A Diageo representative also told agents he had paid for meals for at least six other local ABC boards.

The agents cited Mecklenburg ABC and the company for violating gift bans. Employees later reimbursed Diageo $9,300.

The state ABC also wants to know about a meal between Mecklenburg ABC employees and representatives of Beam Global Spirits and Wine.

As usual, it's all about the money. The state wants to control all the revenue from the liquor sales, but they have to justify changing the law first (to take away the right of local communities to decide liquor policy). Privatization would be allowed only if the state could raise massive taxes on the liquor sales.

you guys are really not that smart are ou? I understand that most of you have no idea how the ABC system works, so let me inform you. Ok, lets say we privatize the ABC system, then who funds the roads , the schools, the parks and hospitals. Well thats what the ABC system does now and it is regulated by local municipalities. The local municipalities have no need to beg the state for funds because they control the funds that come from the "their" ABC system. IF the state were to privatize this, do you really think the Governor or the senate will continue to fund your local projects? Well sure for a few months maybe a year then what. Next point: NC is a control state with highest sales volume and lowest consumption. Stores are regulated and zoned . Do you want an uncontrolled state with ABC stores on every corner adn with in a mile of your childs school. Last point: The media is all for privatization becaus ethey will make milions from the Liquor companies on advertisement.

I agree with all that posted previously; ABC stores are ridiculous and unneeded as well as the "blue laws" that still exist. Do the ABC store employees really get paid that well? Just asking since a few people here said they get paid outrageous salaries or is that just upper-level employees?

Antiquated system--sell it off, let private business take over and let the state reap the tax benefits. There is no reason the state should be in the liquor business.

I purchase all my liqour on my military base. It's tax free, generally cheaper than what the ABC sells it for, AND...I can purchase liqour on Sundays!!! WOohoO!

I agree with Scott. It should be deregulated. This is just one of several other ways the state is really really messing up financially. Why not just have liquor in the Grocery Stores, just like former San Diegan just stated? It would save lots of money and that lots of money could go out to what is really needed and it would be more convenient for everybody to not have to make another stop and use up that gas. This is one crooked government we have in NC.

This is why CA is so much better. You can buy liqour in GROCERY stores. You can buy liqour in RX DRUG STORES. You can buy liqour pretty much everywhere. Go CA!

In my personal estimation they need to stop privateizing anthing within the state of north carolina an actually allowed for there to be some form of regulations put into place that will afford the taxpayers the countys an the state some accountability thats the word that we need an anyone that isn't held accountably they should be fired an the this goes for the legistive respresentives also
