Two Killed In North Carolina After An Amtrak Train Hit Their Car

An Amtrak train heading from Charlotte to New York struck a car at a North Carolina railroad crossing, killing two people.

Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Jeff Gordon said the car was crossing tracks in the Orange County town of Efland on Tuesday morning. He said the woman driving was killed along with a 5-year-old boy who was thrown from the back seat.

Gordon said a 3-month-old girl was pulled from the wreckage and taken to University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

\Amtrak spokeswoman Tracy Connell in Washington says none of the 215 passengers on the Carolinian were hurt. She said the train would likely be delayed for more than two hours.

God... :-( What I want to know is, was she trying to play beat-the-train? We see this happen a little too often with the transit system in L.A. county & the Inland Empire. People seem to think those aren't "real trains" but they are just as heavy and kill just as easily - same goes for the trollies in San Francisco. It's bigger, heavier, has some limitations on visibility, and doesn't stop easily. That's WHY there are all the warnings and gates. *sigh* I'll be interested to see more detail on this story as to why it happened. More than that, I'd like to never see anyone end up like this again.

This is soooo sad. I hope and pray the little 3 month old child makes it. Such a senseless tragedy. God bless the entire family.
