REPORT: Child Home Alone When Fire Broke Out, 15 Animals Died

A four-year-old child was in a home alone Monday when a fire broke out that killed 15 animals, according to WITN's NBC sister station WAVY.

WAVY reports that someone passing by called for help when they saw the Virginia Beach house on fire.

The station cites investigators as saying the child was in bed because he or she was sick when the mom allegedly left the home to go pick up another child at a school nearby.

Fire Department spokesperson Battalian Chief Tim Riley told "Inside is heavy fire damage. There was 15 animals that died. Eight reptiles, three rabbits, two cats and two birds."

WAVY report no charges have been filed, but child protective services is looking into the situation.

The station also reports the fire started when a heat lamp fell over. The child was not hurt.

If the child protective services do not do anything, I think at least the people should be charged with having a zoo in their home. WHo would live a four year old alone?? I have 3 children and would not ever have done that for anything. CHild sick? Bring them with you wrapped in blankets, do not ever leave a child younger than 13 alone. Its just wrong, they can get hurt, this story tells you so.

The parent will probably be slapped on the wrist with no consequences for her actions! Then, somewhere downt the line, we'll read about her again regarding a child dying in her care. Her actions were ridiculous and the child was lucky this time. If not addressed in a serious manner, it will happen again.

I agree.. Sick or not you do NOT leave a 4 yr old child home ALONE for any reason. I have a 4 yr old myself and would never leave him home alone to go and get one of my other 3 children. THANK GOD he is ok.
