A four-year-old child was in a home alone Monday when a fire broke out that killed 15 animals, according to WITN's NBC sister station WAVY.
WAVY reports that someone passing by called for help when they saw the Virginia Beach house on fire.
The station cites investigators as saying the child was in bed because he or she was sick when the mom allegedly left the home to go pick up another child at a school nearby.
Fire Department spokesperson Battalian Chief Tim Riley told WAVY.com: "Inside is heavy fire damage. There was 15 animals that died. Eight reptiles, three rabbits, two cats and two birds."
WAVY report no charges have been filed, but child protective services is looking into the situation.
The station also reports the fire started when a heat lamp fell over. The child was not hurt.
