Perdue Requests Disaster Aid For Dare County

Gov. Beverly Perdue has requested federal assistance for homeowners and businesses affected by a nor'easter that lashed the North Carolina coast.

Perdue is seeking funding for Dare County, where there was major damage. If approved, the declaration will make low-interest loans available to help eligible property owners make repairs. Also eligible will be Currituck, Hyde and Tyrrell counties.

Between Nov. 10-15, a nor'easter spawned from the remnants of Tropical Storm Ida swept through across coastal North Carolina. The most severe damage was found in Dare County, where a survey found several homes and business having sustained major damage.

An SBA disaster declaration would enable eligible citizens to apply for low interest home and personal property loans to pay for repairs and loss of inventory or other business capital.

Hey Bev, just for your own information and future reference, if the structure, house, is in the flood zone they have flood insurance plus homeowners. If it is a business, they have insurance for that too. Now, who are you trying to help? Is this just a ploy to show how concerned you are?

It is not like these houses are lived in year round. They are investment properties. All weekly rentals. The home owner might spend a week there thats it. During the tourist season they get THOUSANDS per week for them. So take 5,000.00 per week and multiply that by 16 weeks. Thats 80,000.00 a year homeowners are making! So why do they need help? If it is not a primary residence then you should not be able to get help. Like i said they are investment properties. It is a bad investment to buy ocean front, so why should the tax payers bail them out?

Millionares always get the breaks. Let the ocean do it's thing already. The heck with the houses built right on the water. They are asking for this. This is just plain stupid. Look the the millions of dollars they spend on Hwy 12. Almost every year. The sad thing is all of us have to pay with higher taxes so the rich can get richer as normal. Please vote Perdue out of office next time.

Tony complaining about the "fat cat rich home owners on the beach"... Well, as much as I hate it, those "fat cat rich home owners" own the property that drives our economic engine here in Dare County and everywhere else along the NC coast.

I wonder how many people will truly get the assistance they need. Or will all the money go to fat cat rich home owners on the beach the use the houses for vacations or rental properties? Gov. Bev will put it to you. Strikes again. Thanks Madam Gov.
