Governor Orders Closer Look At Local ABC Boards

A wide range in pay for local managers of North Carolina's ABC boards and the reluctance of boards to make that information public has drawn the attention of the governor.

The Star-News of Wilmington reported Sunday that its inquiry into salaries at New Hanover County and other ABC boards prompted the chairman of the state ABC commission to take the matter to Gov. Beverly Perdue's office, which ordered a closer look.

The newspaper reported that Billy Williams, the administrator of the New Hanover Alcoholic Beverage Control board who has worked there for nearly 42 years, makes $232,200 a year. His son, Bradley Williams, an employee since 1994 and the assistant administrator, earns $115,500 annually.

State commission chairman Jon Williams makes $109,553 a year. State Administrator Michael Herring earns $97,279.

From the stories I have heard over the years, it sounds like the ABC stores are pretty much a candy shop for anyone that is in charge of them. The state should get out of the booze business and the liquor stores should be privately owned!

I,ve said it before and will say it again. Why do you think local and federal goverments want control of everything. GREED. Good old boy and girls get a piece of the tax money pie. Get out of running this stuff and let "we the people" do it. Free up our state and let us the people make the money and the state get the taxes. In ten years NC will be like CA. Illegals and all.

See what happens when politicians are allowed to rule by fiat. They take care of their pals and too bad for the rest of us. This applies to the ABCs involving booze as well as the ABCs involving higher education. It is time for some big time changes. How about it Bev???

Wow! Is anyone surprised? There are a lot of agencies that need to be audited and apprised that the "good old boy" network is wrong and costly! This is a good start!
