A wealthy Democratic Party contributor says his donations had nothing to do with obtaining a boat-ramp permit for a coastal development he owned.
Gary Allen testified Tuesday at the State Board of Elections investigation into former Gov. Mike Easley's campaign and the state Democratic Party. Allen said he couldn't remember specifically a $50,000 check he wrote to the party in June 2003. Documents submitted earlier this week show Allen was concerned about delays in the boat ramp for the project called Oyster Harbour in Brunswick County. Allen told the board that the donation and a subsequent $50,000 party donation had no relation to the ramp's eventual approval. He said the construction to complete the ramp actually cost twice what he had expected.
The board also heard from Michael Hayden, Easley's former campaign finance director.
