Long Battle Comes To An End For Local Volunteer Firefighter

A family of loved ones and firefighters will soon say goodbye to one of their own in a grand scale funeral procession through one eastern Carolina city.

Fran Ryan was a volunteer firefighter for Old Ford Fire Department in Beaufort County. Ryan made the tremendously hard decision a few weeks ago to stop the treatment that has kept her alive for more than four decades, and in fact, helped plan her own funeral. Thursday she passed away peacefully surrounded by her husband Tim and daughter Veronica.

After coping with a kidney failure since birth 46 years ago, Tim says Fran's body started breaking down. She had two kidney transplants, one from her sister that lasted three years, and another which last 18 months. Just recently doctors performed open heart surgery, and Fran's entry sites for dialysis started to fail.

Tim says Fran believed she was just prolonging the inevitable. "It's a choice that she made and she said she had a long talk with God and she was good with it. She wanted to stop dialysis and let nature take its course."

Tim says Fran spent 12 years at the Old Ford Fire Department being a mentor to young firefighters and even being an example for their daughter who followed in her mother's footsteps to become a firefighter.

Fran's visitation will be Friday night at 7:00 pm at Old Ford Church. A full firefighter's processional is scheduled after her funeral at 2:00 pm on Saturday.

We wish to personally thank each and every person that has come to help us during this sad time. The fire fighters, law enforcement members, our families and dear friends that have come from everywhere to see off this most cherished woman. To the people of the our community that stood silent in respect along the roadway as the procession went by... God bless you all. It was such a touching way to honor her. We were very touched by this show of respect and honor. Fran was my wife and my best friend for over 25 yrs. She will be missed greatly in our little place on Earth, but I know that her spirit will live on in each persons life she touched. Thank you one and all for your thoughts and prayers...

To the firemen and all the units that were represented @ Fran's funeral today, I want thank each and everyone of you. Being a part of the fire department was such a big part of Fran's life, and you all deserve to be thanked not only for helping to fullful her dying wishes, honoring a fellow fire fighter, but also for all that you do to help in your communities. We all take so much for granted, and your services are one of them for many of us. So THANK YOU to each and everyone of you for the support that you show to your fellow fire fighters their families, and all that you do for the community. Rest in Peace Fran, we love you. To the Ryan family my prayers go out for you. I will greatly miss Fran cause she always like to argue with me and she helped keep us in line and on the right track. There was never a dull moment when she was around. I was always amused by her toe socks and that is a memory i will never forget. Her legacy will live on in all of us. When we have our next call she will be there overseeing the scene and making sure we are doing everything as we are supposed too. This was an outstanding woman who would always tell you what she thought no matter who you were and she was always there for us no matter what. On calls she made sure we had water, refilled our air bottles, and stripped us of our turnout gear when came out of the fire. A lot has been learned from her through the years. She was one of the best staging officers i have ever seen. I love you Fran and we will greatly miss you. Tim and Veronica may her legacy live on through you. We are there for you no matter what. Any time of the day.
