Caregiver Faces Charges In Alleged Abuse Of Infant

A 3-month-old North Carolina girl is hospitalized with multiple injuries, and her caregiver is jailed on an abuse charge.

The Salisbury Post reported Monday that 23-year-old Sandra Gallardo Petatan is being held in the Cabarrus County Jail under $200,000 bond on a charge of child abuse inflicting serious injury.

The infant is at Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast in Concord.

Kannapolis Police Lt. Steve Belk said Monday that NorthEast staff contacted police early Saturday morning after the child was brought to the hospital.

Belk said the child has a skull fracture, bleeding on the brain, bruises and a broken arm.

The Cabarrus County Department of Social Services is conducting a joint investigation with police. Officials didn't know if Petatan had retained an attorney.

My prayers are with this child, God bless. The abuse of our children has got to stop. I have suggestions for the abusers punishment(it ain't good) but WITN would not print.

Um, I know there were more comments than this. Seems like different people police the comments. Whoever it is today? I wish they would do something else. I enjoy reading the DUMB comments. Not the bad ones.

I agree this is a innocent child that has been you might as well say tortured. It is wrong and by no means should happen. My thoughts and prayers to the child and the parents of the child.

What could a 3 month old possibly do to make someone do this to them? This is an innocent person who cannot fight back! If I was the parent of this child I would be the one going to jail! God bless this child and the parents!

Attention Wise One. This is a 3 mth. old baby! If this child isn't being held, the ONLY other place it should be is in a crib or playpen. You are right this is VERY unfortunate! Unfortunate that parents don't take care of these angels that God has blessed them with. NO excuses!

Once again, confirmation of a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain indicates to me that some type of blunt trauma has occurred. This may be due to negligence or an unfortunate accident.

HEY PARENTS!!! Please make sure before you place your precious child in the care of someone else while you are working ALL day long that you get someone that has done it for A LONG TIME with excellent references and HAS BEEN LICENSED BY THE STATE!!! People who do this (a lot of the time) make more money doing this OR they can not find something else for work and these kinds of caregivers are a dime a dozen! There are many many good ones. They usually have a waiting list but worth the wait. Start looking as soon as you get pregnant and know work is a must. THIS IS YOUR CHILD'S LIFE. IT'S IMPORTANT TO RESEARCH PEOPLE AND GET EXCELLENT CARE!
