Voters Head To Polls For Local Elections

Voters in parts of 26 North Carolina counties are choosing local leaders or winnowing down candidates for mayor and city council primary races.

The polls opened Tuesday morning for about 90 separate primary and general election races stretching across the state.

Four seats are up for grabs on the Wake County school board Tuesday following a passionate campaign between supporters and opponents of the district's student reassignment policies.

In Eastern Carolina, the contested races are as follows: commissioners in Atlantic Beach; mayor and aldermen in New Bern; mayor and council in Elizabeth City; city council in Rocky Mount; and commissioners in Sharpsburg.

Some towns have elections Tuesday where there is only one person on the ballot for the position they are running for.
