Community Colleges To Enroll Illegal Immigrants

The State Board of Community Colleges has voted to allow illegal immigrants to enroll at North Carolina campuses starting next year.

The board voted Friday to approve the plan, allowing undocumented immigrants to attend the system's 58 campuses if they've graduated from a U.S. high school and pay out-of-state tuition. Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton was the only board member to vote against the plan. He did not explain his reasoning during the debate.

The policy committee's chairman, Stuart Fountain, says the children of parents who came into the country illegally shouldn't be punished for the federal government's failure to deal with their legal status.

Illegals can win admission to the campuses after April 1, 2010.

North Carolina community colleges are one step closer toward returning to a policy of accepting illegal immigrants as students.

A committee of the State Board of Community Colleges voted unanimously Thursday to endorse new rules that would allow undocumented immigrants to enroll at the 58 campuses. The system has changed its illegal immigrant admission policy four times since 2000.

The proposal heading to the full board would admit illegal immigrants if they graduate from a U.S. high school and pay the out-of-state tuition rate. That's about five times the in-state rate.

Panel chairman Stuart Fountain said the policy is balanced and fair and sets a high bar for admission. About 50 opponents to the policy change protested outside community college offices in Raleigh.

Some groups are planning to protest today outside of a meeting of the state board of community colleges, at issue-whether people who are not in this country legally should be allowed to attend community colleges.

The State Board of Community Colleges will discuss the policy today that currently bars illegal immigrants from enrolling in community colleges, even at out-of-state tuition rates. Some members of the state board said over the summer, they want to reverse the ban, and allow illegal immigrants to enroll. The students would pay out-of state tuition rates of about $7,000 a year.

A study commissioned by the system showed that South Carolina is the only other state that bans illegal immigrants.

Well it's well known that GW Bush talked about taking greater border Control and at the same time saw the immigrant in he US beneficial to our economy. He sought to have FREE PASSAGE FROM ONE COUNTRY TO ANOTHER.It might have benefited his pocketbook. The whole stampede of illegals in the past eight years come from THE BIG BUSINESS of OIL.Our politicians were trading immigrants to Oil Rights in Mexico. And that is a fact,it's not a lie.Bush told it..check this out. http://www.ontheissues.org/Celeb/George_W__Bush_Immigration.htm...Illegals no not want any type of "REGULATION" people. They would be documented and HAVE TO PAY TAXES.You people that are hiring them and giving them rental homes should be made to pay big fines.Every person crossing our borders shoud be identified..COLOR DOES'NT MATTER!

TOO AMERICAN..Not Delirious at all.You definitely didn't read all the post.If so you would have read this was a quote by one past President and someone else has put it in books;many of them.DID you read the latter part of the post, which is mine.Only a "few sought citizenship" and others continued to live near nomadic lives, moving wherever jobs were offered, mostly illegal still abusing the benefits of a free and open society.(NOW)Most are open,"not in shadows" and out right make DEMANDS taught by lawyers that study our justice system. Please get others to post.Call State & Congress Reps.I am not for granting amnesty as it did not work before when there were about 1.2 to 2 million illegals in this country.Oh the quote, was Republican Ronald Reagan's.The year Reagan basically granted amnesty, most illegals were migrant workers moving from state to state.Where have you been living? This is part of AMERICAN HISTORY.There are books to catch you up.Not My Imagination, but real facts.

what are you trying to argue with me? im confused. i dont think you read my post fully. or am i missing something--are you saying that all brown people should be turned away at the u.s. border on suspicion of terrorism? white people terrorize too! born and bred us citizens have been known to be terrorists, so maybe you should look over your shoulder everywhere you go! legalization has nothing to do with a persons intent towards this country. its easy to penetrate the system either way.

"We have consistently supported a legalization program which is both generous to the alien and fair to the countless thousands of people throughout the world who seek legally to come to America. The legalization provisions in this act will go far to improve the lives of a class of individuals who now must hide in the shadows, without access to many of the benefits of a free and open society. Very soon many of these men and women will be able to step into the sunlight and, ultimately, if they choose, they may become Americans."quote from former president which later said he regretted this decision to the fullest and wished that he had shut the borders down.Only a few sought citizenship and others continued to live near nomadic lives, moving wherever jobs were offered, mostly illegal still abusing the benefits of a free and open society. Most are open, not in shadows and out right make DEMAND.Taught by lawyers that study our justice system. Please get others to post.Call State & Congress Reps

What is the point in called them "illegals" when they get away with everything and no one enforces the law anyway. Lets uncomplicate this mess and just say EVERYONE is LEGAL!! All the issues that are on the forfront of the news today and NO ONE IS DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT. They just want to talk about it and pass it on to the next official.

Kids, lets clarify something for perspective. A Pakistan terrorist can enter to this country through Mexico. He is not mexican, pakistanian, get a social security number or Tin number, get a NC drivers license, use our schools, our social services all illegally and learn to use bombs. What you are saying, you have no problem with him getting and education we subsidize it?

Let me see if I understand what the community college board is saying? The community college is funded by county, state and federal taxes. Tuition does not come close to covering the costs, even out of state rates. (compare what private colleges charge) So for a group of people who are NOT citizens, who do NOT pay taxes, who do NOT obey our laws, and who do NOT speak our language. Our beaurocrats want to GIVE them our tax money so they can be better educated and take jobs away from hard working tax paying citizens. I think this is JUST WRONG. I do wonder? Why does our law enforcement worry about things like speeding and parking fines rather than enforcing our immigration laws, when illegal immigration brings such huge problems to our economy? (Overwhelmed social services, medical, and schools, not to mention the crime and drug problems) Yes I know that all immigrants are not illegal, most obey the laws, but to ignore such a large problem is hard to understand.

Kids..I know dozens of people "hog house worker and owners" and NONE either work nor have workers that work 20 hours a day.I don't know where you are getting you info.20 hours a day of labor is against every labor law Federal and NC sate. You should report it to the local officials .I know of hog operations in Craven,Pitt,Greene,Washington,Duplin,Johnston,Wayne,Lenoir,Wilson,Martin and also know employees that work on them.As a fact the legal employees would not have it.It you know of any operation that would stoop to working an illegal or legal person 20 hours a day it is your duty to report it immediately to authorities.Such practice is not humane.Let's deal with facts.Special occasions do merit overtime, legals have to do it also.If this type of practice is going on you are making a great point..Report it !
