Senator Shoots Home Intruder

A sheriff says North Carolina's longest serving lawmaker has shot an intruder at his Tabor City home. Columbus County Sheriff Chris Batten tells The Star-News of Wilmington that 74-year-old state Sen. R.C. Soles shot one of two people who kicked in the front door Sunday.

Batten says the intruder was taken to a hospital, though he did not know the extent of his injuries.

The sheriff's office referred a call from The Associated Press to the State Bureau of Investigation. The SBI is investigating a claim by a man that the senator tried to fondle him more than a decade ago. The accuser later said he made up the claim. Soles has not been charged and denies the accusation.

A call to an SBI spokeswoman was not immediately returned. Two calls to a number listed for Soles' Tabor City home went unanswered.
