It was a brand new beginning for future doctors at the Brody School of Medicine as nearly 80 students prepare to serve eastern Carolina.
The annual white coat ceremony took place Friday at ECU's Brody School of Medicine. The class of 2013 consists of 39 woman and 39 men--the largest class in the school's history, according to school administrators .
Doctors say the reason for the increase is the increased need for medical doctors especially in the rural communities. Dr. Harry Adams from the Brody School of Medicine says, "I think there are many areas in the counties that don't have enough physicians and it's very important that we train future doctors to stay in small communities."
Senator Kay Hagan introduced legislation that aims to help the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University train more doctors for rural areas.
