Emergency Responders Practice Search & Rescue

It was nearly ten years ago that Hurricane Floyd, dubbed the storm of the century, ravaged eastern Carolina. Lessons learned during that catastrophe have helped rescuers since then.

Thursday they put what they learned to the test to be prepared for the next big storm.

Agencies from across the state arrived in Pitt County Thursday for a statewide emergency training exercise. Search and rescue personnel focused on air operations at the former Pinecrest Mobile Home Park in Greenville. It was a fitting location since it was the place residents were forced from their homes due to flood waters from Hurricane Floyd .

The state Division of Emergency Management says grants from Homeland Security assisted the development of a statewide network for search and rescue.
