U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler is introducing a bill that will require employers to verify the work authorization status of employees through a nationwide database.
The Democratic representing western North Carolina will join other congressional leaders in Washington on Thursday to introduce the measure. His office said it would increase border security and interior security while requiring employers to check workers against a Department of Homeland Security database known as E-Verify.
Shuler's office said the measure will reduce illegal immigration. He first filed a version of the bill in 2007.
