There are no Manhattans on the northern end of Hatteras Island. No Grasshoppers or Hurricanes, either -- not with alcohol in them.
Some restaurant owners hope a vote later this month will make it possible to serve mixed drinks like their competitors in nearby villages.
Hatteras Island is made up of seven villages. Last year, the three southern villages of Hatteras, Frisco and Buxton approved a liquor-by-the-drink referendum. Off the island, businesses in Nags Head can serve mixed drinks, and Manteo approved a referendum last month.
Voters in the villages of Avon, Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo vote July 12th on whether their restaurants can serve alcohol other than beer and wine.
So far, opposition has been quieter than in previous votes.
