Tribe Wants Name Change For Lumber River

The Lumbee Indian tribe wants to change the name of the river that winds through its ancestral lands in North Carolina.

The Fayetteville Observer reports the Tribal Council passed an ordinance last month to ask the state Legislature to change the name of the Lumber River to the Lumbee River.

A tribe elder says the river was named in 1809 by state lawmakers who also established the Lumber River Navigation Co. to help move wood and other goods through southeastern North Carolina and into the Pee Dee River in South Carolina.

Lawrence Locklear says those living in the area have always called it the Lumber River.

Federal officials would also have to approve the name change, which could be a tall task.

We slaughtered all the pigs, watched as a bunch of ignorant dorks came into town and built the Coopers a Lincoln Log Ark, decided to leave the names of the Lumber and Roanoke Rivers as is and used just one foot to kick Pocahontas a new hat.

Leave it as Lumber River. The lumbees can call it what they want. That is what the river is known as and that is how it should remain. That proposition is the stupidest thing I heard.

There was a guy named Tad from Jamesville who walked into Hamilton, he made a mess, walked back home, and there has been a guy named Pocahontas there ever since.

My ancesters were British, so I demand that we change the name of Greenville back to Martinsboro and Washington to Pea Town. While we're at it, let's change the name of the United States, back to the Colonies.
