SBI Investigating Former Governor & Wife

The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the actitivies of former Gov. Mike Easley when he was in office.

The Attorney General's office confirmed that in a letter Monday to Senate Republican Leader Phil Berger. That letter said the SBI is working with the FBI in its investigation into the former governor and his wife's position at NC State.

In the letter sent to Berger, Cooper's chief of staff says the SBI has been investigating Easley since "earlier this year."

In a news release, the Republican leader said while it was reassuring to know that the SBI was on the case, he still wants a special prosecutor appointed to conduct an investigation at the state level into allegations of corruption involving the Easleys.

Meanwhile, attorneys for NC State says they have found that e-mails during the hiring process of former the first lady were deleted from the account of former Chancellor James Oblinger.

The university's lawyers said in a letter to the U.S. attorney's office released Wednesday that they have been able to determine how and why the e-mails sent from and received by Oblinger's e-mail account were deleted. They said there are periods of time in the first half of 2005 for which officials have been unable to recover e-mails.

Easley was hired in May of 2005.

Oblinger attorney Press Millen says the chancellor may have deleted e-mails to clean up his account but never engaged in any wholesale deletion of e-mails targeting those related to Easley.
