Statewide Unemployment Inches Past 11%

There is not good news for the unemployed in North Carolina, as the statewide rate climbed in May.

The figures out Friday show the unemployment rate at 11.1%. It's the first increase in three months, as in April and March stood at 10.8%.

The state says unemployment increased by 17,468 workers in May, to 508,834. Also the number of workers who were unemployed, but actively seeking work, is at an all-time high.

The state's jobless rate has soared from 7 percent in October.

I wish it was easy for me to get a free handout! lol I just graduated with an associate's degree in x-ray and there are NO jobs. So I'm going back for CT and MRI. I ended up losing my apartment and having to move in with family. Unfortunately, people that work hard, try to live their life respectfully and really need the money; tend to be the ones that never get it.

I have been laid off 2 times in 2 years. I was a top performer but cannot help what is going on in my industry. I spend hours everyday searching for jobs and applying for jobs that are even 1/2 of the income I was making before just to have an income and get off unemployment. Many of us are trying hard to seek employment - not working the system.

Does this 11% mean the percentage of ALL adults between the minimum age allowed to work and the age of retirement, or the number of workers who have had to go on unemployment? The reason I ask is that there are a lot of freeloaders that never work! So how can they be included now and say the economy is so bad? If the economy was at its greatest ever in history, these bums would not work at a legal job. TOO easy to get free handouts.
