Ex-Raleigh Mayor Fetzer Elected New GOP Chairman

North Carolina's Republican Party has chosen former Raleigh mayor Tom Fetzer to help them raise money, recruit candidates and win elections.

GOP activists gathering Saturday in Raleigh elected Fetzer as the party's new state chairman after a second round of balloting. Fetzer and Lee County Commissioner Chad Adams were left standing after the first round of voting narrowed the field of four candidates.

Adams bowed out when it seemed clear Fetzer would win, and the
convention proclaimed Fetzer the winner.

One of the new chairman's biggest jobs will be to reverse GOP
losses in state and national races in 2006 and 2008.

The other two candidates were former Guilford County GOP
chairman Marcus Kindley and retired Navy veteran Bill Randall of
Wake Forest.
