Proposed State Tax Increases

The House will consider a nearly $18 billion budget proposal for North Carolina state government next year that would grow if a $940 million tax plan is also approved.

The chamber's two largest committees are expected Tuesday to consider the spending bill for the next two years and a separate tax package that would increase sales and income tax rates and taxes on cigarettes and alcohol.

Rep. Paul Luebke of Durham County is the chief architect of the tax package. He said additional revenues would target cuts in education and health care that lawmakers and advocates consider the most onerous.

The plan would change the sales tax rate most people pay from 6.75 percent to 7 percent, while two new income tax brackets would be created for the state's highest wage earners. The cigarette tax also would go up 25 cents per pack to 60 cents.

House Democrats are in the majority and want a budget approved by the end of the week. Republicans say they won't support higher taxes.

White, black, yellow,or green...Democrat or Republican....all politicians lie!!!!!!!!!! It's never going to end untill We stop it: and take back control of our county away from the crooked corporations that line the pockets of crooked politicians, stop the influx of illegal immigrants who drain our resources without paying anything in, and untill we as a nation get back to producing something that is worth buying...instead of importing everything from China, Mexico, and anywhere else these crooked corporations go to get cheap labor and produce subpar products!!! This is not what our forefathers had invisioned when they declared our independence over 230 yrs ago. It is time...time to stand and say enough is enough!!!! But, who will listen if we do not stand together and say it together??????? IT'S TIME!!!!!

Derek, let me be very clear about his. Obama is spending "Trillions". Billions is just a drop in the bucket. We don't have any trillionaires in the US. So we spend more than Bush did in 8 years in less than 3 months and say it is Bush's fault? DLH, did you not notice what Saddam was doing or did you ignore what he said. Our party is responsible right now. We are the ones making the call and will pay the price when elections come. The lie you refer to is party rhetoric and doesn't hold water in the country. It is dissappointment to those in the party that think, why did Bush not blame Clinton? That will be made clear that the method used is notoriously corrupt. Look at the amo that republicans have? Haven't noticed? Well, democrats, unless they go more moderate will loose everything in the next election. Sorry, if the agenda smells, looks like, probably is what it is. Obama will be a one term and both houses will fall. Look at the polls and understand the facts.

You know its funny to see all these so called conservatives up here complaining about spending when it was Bush's policies that got us in this mess. Keep in mind that the one's complaining are the same ones that sit back and said nothing while Bush wasted 100's of billions of taxpayer dollars in Iraq over a LIE!! that him and his crooked administration made up just to take Saddam Hussein out of power. Not one word was said, Not one peep! and now all of a sudden your worried about spending. GIVE ME A BREAK!!. The best thing you complainers can do is keep quiet the same way you did when Bush was giving your tax money away in Iraq.

You gotta spend money to make some money....... OSOC - at least Obama is spending/wasting money locally here in the US, instead of 10 billion a month in Iraq.
