N.C. State Calls Emergency Meeting

An emergency meeting of the North Carolina State University board of trustees has been called to consider a severance package for the official who hired a former governor's wife.

Multiple media outlets reported that the Monday afternoon board meeting was called to consider a severance package for former
provost Larry Nielsen. He resigned last month after questions were raised about his hiring of Mary Easley, wife of then-Gov. Mike Easley.

The university said Sunday the severance package for Nielsen was more than the amount announced to the public. The school had said he was to receive nearly $300,000 for six months, but now says the amount had been raised to $310,000 by university chancellor James
Oblinger.

This is really a window into how corrupt the system has become. Somebody gives a government officials wife an unbelievably high salary for doing virtually nothing AND THEN when it gets out, he resigns but is given a big fat severance package for leaving. Unreal! these people cannot lose no matter what they do. Where can I get an application?

If this board wants him to have the money, let them pay it out of their own pockets and stop stealing from the tax payers. He resigned, no job gives severance package to people who quit, except at tax payer expense.

Let me get this straight, he resigns and gets 310,000. Gee if I could resign my job and get even the unpaid sick time I have which won't be paid, I would be happy. How do they dare to give him a dime?

The man resigns then gets a raise? When he comes back to school after six months he will make $156,000 and teach ONE CLASS. Total waste of tax payer's money. Fire him and Mrs. Easley on grounds of fraud.

Why do we owe him anything as long as we are still paying Mary E's $850,000? This is ridiculous. He resigned on his own after saddling the state with an employee we did not need at a price we cannot afford. Spending has to stop somewhere and it appears it is now.
