NC Troops Participating In D-Day Observance

Troops from North Carolina bases are participating in the final day of the observance of the 65th anniversary of the D-Day invasion of France.

The three-day observance of the World War II invasion in Normandy ends Sunday with a mock airborne assault that includes about 40 paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg.

Col. Merle D. Hart is commander of the 440th Airlift Wing at Pope Air Force Base and was invited to lay a cemetery wreath. The Fayetteville Observer reported that Hart was a crew member of a plane that dropped paratroopers on June 6, 1944.
