2 Asheville Workers On Leave For Facebook Comments

Asheville city officials say a civilian police employee who posted profane Facebook comments about Occupy Asheville protesters and another city employee who joked about a comment online have been put on administrative leave.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports (http://avlne.ws/tb4Iu9) that forensics specialist Lynn Fraser and community relations team member Melissa Williams were placed on leave while officials review their actions.

City manager Gary Jackson says he can't estimate how long the employee reviews will take.

Police say Fraser complained about the protesters in profane terms on her personal Facebook page and dismissed their suggestions that videotaping them was violating their Constitutional rights. In her reply, Williams repeated the profanity and added "LMAO."

Williams apologized Monday, saying she realizes it was inappropriate to joke about sensitive issues. Fraser hasn't commented.

The key word's in this story are "on her personal Facebook page". It was her FB page and NOBODY has any business saying ANYTHING about what someone puts on their OWN FB page...OR ANY OTHER PAGE THAT THEY CREATED. Heck. I know a man and woman who dis-owned their own daughter because the daughter was tired of seeing her mother and father spending outrageous amounts of time with her sisters kids, but they never spent time with her kids. She removed her sister from her FB friends list, just so she would not have to see the pictures, (and prevent her kids from seeing the pictures of their grandparents spending so much time with their cousins). Her parents told her that her sister had a right to post the pictures, and she does have that right. BUT! The other daughter had a right to remove her sister from her friends list to protect her kids.....without repercussion. After all. It's just a page on the internet....not life and death. She has moved on with her life.

You are a moron if you post your personal agenda or hateful comments on facebook. Think about what you do and what you say people, because we all are being watched.

The left-wingers in this country are becoming more communist every day! This is so ridiculous. What happened to privacy? This is still a free country (at least for awhile)!

I agree, this is completely in violation of these employees' free speech rights. Those of us who work for the public aren't supposed to have opinions, I guess...or if we do, we're supposed to keep them quiet. This is one reason why I don't have a Facebook or MySpace page, and never will.

video taping them is not violating their rights if they are outside in clear view of the public. if u dont believe me , ask New Hanover county deputy about him trying to make someone stop using his camera in public!! i will tell you, these low life lazy thugs that are raping women, destroying property, urinating on help wanted signs, on police cars and fighting, stealing are the worse than who they are protesting against!! go occupy a place of employment, if you cant find a job then vote obama out.

That's why they were admonished for criticizing the Occupy crowd...it's Asheville. I guess if they made comments about the ongoing Herman Cain incident, they would have been promoted.

Free Speech for "Occupiers" but none for what city employees say on their own time.....Asheville is just as crazy as those loons in Chapel Hill

So let me get this right, as long as you're talking about a conservative you can call them whatever you want and say whatever you want about their beliefs, but God help you if you say it about a liberal? This was a personal page on personal time. Grow up Asheville!
