More Private School Scholarships Being Considered

North Carolina legislative leaders are considering locating extra money so all children who applied and qualify for taxpayer money for tuition at private or religious schools can receive it.

House Speaker Thom Tillis and Senate leader Phil Berger signaled their interest in locating more funds for the "opportunity scholarships" while speaking Tuesday at a rally organized by a school-choice group in front of the Legislative Building.

The legislature set aside $10 million last year to give up to $4,200 per child starting this fall. About 4,500 applications appear to meet qualifications. The group Parents for Educational Freedom in North Carolina says between $6 million and $8 million would be needed.

The potential expansion comes four months after a judge blocked the program. The state Supreme Court later removed the injunction.
