Bald Head Island in the southeast part of the state could receive FEMA assistance for beach erosion caused by Hurricane Earl.
The island's shoreline protection officer is working to to figure out exactly how much sand was lost because of the hurricane. In the meantime, village officials have asked the Federal Emergency Management Agency to get involved, as there may have been enough damage to seek federal assistance.
