North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper issued a warning to North Carolinians about a new scam threatening to dupe people out of money.
The caller claims they are with the Federal State Bureau of North Carolina. They tell you to pay the debt you owe or face jail time.
“Don’t let scammers intimidate you into paying debts you don’t owe,” Cooper said. “These calls come from crooks, not real law enforcement officers.”
There is no agency called the Federal State Bureau of North Carolina. The people receiving the call may not even owe any agency any money, but the scammers hope to intimidate people to pay up regardless.
The threatening calls come from (336) 505-7092, a Google Voice number that could be used by scammers anywhere in the world. The 336 area code is from the Greensboro area of North Carolina.
Cooper reminds people to never give out personal information, particularly your bank account and credit card information.
Consumers can report debt collection scams to the Attorney General’s Office by calling 1-877-5-NO-SCAM or filing a consumer complaint online.
