Scam Alert: Scams Crafted From Headlines

Scammers love to use newsworthy events to craft new scams, and now they are doing so with the Supreme Court ruling on President Barack Obama's health care law.

North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper said scammers are pretending to be government employees when they call people. This is a case of where the scam artist knows just enough to be dangerous.

The caller will have a little information, like the routing number for your bank. They will say they're calling about the Affordable Health Care Act and need you to verify the number or other information. Then they push forward for more information that will help them get access to your bank account.

Remember that legitimate government employees should never call asking for your personal information. If you receive such a call, hang up.

Also, remember that your telephone's caller I.D. feature can be manipulated. Scammers can make it appear that your bank, a charity, a government office, or someone else is calling.
