Scam Alert: How To Stop Voicemail Hackers

Britain's phone hacking scandal has made headlines around the world. A Congressman from New York is urging action to keep it from becoming a problem for consumers in the U.S..

Congressman Steve Israel demonstrated how easy it is for anyone to hack a voice-mailbox. Hackers only have to go to a spoofing website and plug in your cell phone number. They will have access to your voicemails within seconds.

The only way to stop potential voicemail hackers is to ensure that your voicemail is password protected, police said. Israel said some carriers require voicemail passwords, but others like Sprint and T-Mobile do not. He is not calling on the FCC to make voicemail passwords mandatory on all carriers.

A spokesperson for a spoofing website said the site does not condone or allow illegal uses and is for entertainment only.
