Scam artists are once again using trusted government agencies to trick their victims. They are now using the U.S. Postal Service.
Targets of this scam receive an email saying it is from the postal service. The email says the recipient has a package being held and that they have to pay to pick it up since it has been left for so many days.
The email says they recipient only has to pay about a five dollar fee, but that isn't what the scam artists are after. They want you to click on a link inside the email that could come with a virus or a hidden code that could take over your computer and steal personal information.
Eva Jackson of the U.S. Postal Service said they leave notices in mailboxes and never send out emails.
People are quick to fall for this scam since the U.S Postal Service is such a trusted institution.
"In fact the United States Postal Service for several years now has been considered the most trusted government agency. So we are very much trusted, but we are not sending out the emails and people just really need to be aware," Jackson said.
