SCAM ALERT: Fraudulent Payment Requests

A local police department is warning about a phishing scam coming to people in their email and on their phones.

Jacksonville police said people are getting emails and texts that appear to be from their wireless provider asking for payment. Police say these texts are scams.

The police department has been made aware of an incident of an email "phishing" scam in which citizens might receive an email or text message from their wireless service provider requesting a payment. The request for payment is fraudulent and is not from the wireless service provider.

Police remind you to watch for bad grammar and spelling mistakes in emails or texts like this, since they can be a red flag. Also if you see a link in a suspicious email, don't click on it. Rest your cursor over the link to see if it matches what the link says. The link should reveal the company's real web address, not a string of cryptic numbers.
