The North Carolina Attorney General's Office says a person pretending to work for the credit bureau Equifax attempted to get account information about a bank's customer.
Officials said the bank employee became suspicious when the caller asked if there would be a charge for the information on the customer. The caller reportedly had a heavy foreign accent. The call appeared to come from California.
The North Carolina Attorney General's Office says legitimate requests for customer or account information are usually made in writing or through other established processes, not by phone.
