ID Thieves Target Kids

An investigation on The Today Show revealed how scam artists steal the unblemished credit of children, even newborns.

The Today Show story featured a 9-year-old girl who is in default on utility bills, a teenager with $750,000 in debt, and a 2-year-old with a pile of credit card bills.

A recent check of 40,000 children by identity monitoring company Debix found more than 4,000 cases of tainted identities. The stolen credit can go unnoticed for years, since many parents don't think to run a credit check in their child's name.

Experts say you can't get a child's credit report through the standard free credit report sites. You should consider starting with contacting Trans Union directly, which is considered the most parent-friendly of the three major credit reporting bureaus.

If Trans Union has no report on file for your child, chances are good, they are not a victim of identity theft. However, if there is a report, or you have a specific reason to believe your child may be a victim, you should follow up with Equifax and Experian.
