Scammers Using "Make-A-Wish Foundation" Name

The North Carolina Division of Aging and Adult Services issued a warning about a sweepstakes scam that claims to be linked up with a well-known charity that helps sick children.

State officials say scammers who say they are with the government or with the Make-A-Wish Foundation are calling people and saying they've won a contest run by the charity. They then try to get the victims to wire money to cover taxes and fees for the prize.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation has confirmed that this is a scam. State officials remind you that legitimate sweepstakes operations do not require anyone to send money in advance to get a prize.

People interested in making a donation to Make-A-Wish Foundation should visit the charity's official website.

The state also says callers may claim to be agents of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the Internal Revenue Service or the U.S. Customs Service. They often provide fictitious names and phone numbers of people who falsely claim to be representatives of the Make-A-Wish Foundation or insurance carriers such as Lloyd’s of London.
