FBI Warns Of Rental Scams

As spring break and summer approaches, the FBI says many people are still falling prey to rental scams. The FBI says scam artists are using fake checks in two ways to scam you out of your money.

In one scenario, scam artists send the renter a check for too much money and ask for the remainder to be sent back to them. If the renter deposits the fake check, it may take the bank a few days to find it's counterfeit. At that point, the renter may have sent money back to the scam artist and then also be responsible to the bank for the amount of the fake check.

In another scenario, the scammer writes a check for the correct amount, but soon cancels the reservation and asks for a refund. Again, the check is found to be counterfeit and the victim is held responsible by the bank for all losses.

If you have been a victim of Internet crime, the FBI wants you to file a complaint at www.IC3.gov.
