BBB Warns Of Fake Lottery Scam

The BBB of Eastern North Carolina says a new lottery scam has emerged. People are getting emails and phone calls claiming to be from the Better Business Bureau. You're told you have won a lottery. In order to receive the prize, you must first wire money back.

In some cases, the scammers used the names of real BBB employees, directing victims to legitimate bios and profiles online to make them seem more credible.

“Many people are struggling in the current economy and when someone tells you that you’ve won millions in a lottery, it can seem like an answer to prayer,” said Steve Cox, President and CEO of the Council of Better Business Bureaus. “Every year, tens of thousands of people contact BBB about a suspicious lottery and instead of cashing in, many lose thousands of dollars they don’t have.”

The BBB says they don't run a lottery, and anytime you're asked to wire money to someone you don't know, beware. You can't get it back once it's gone.

If you have been contacted by someone posing as a Better Business Bureau employee, contact your local BBB and report the incident.

Common sense: If they say you've won millions, but first you must wire them thousands, tell them to take it out of your winnings and give you the difference. There's a stupid meme on the Internet that's formatted "(Adjective) (noun) is (same adjective)," e.g. "Cute baby is cute." It fits here. "Obvious scam is obvious."
