The Better Business Bureau of Eastern North Carolina is warning people about pop-ups that come after making a purchase online.
The pop-up includes a coupon or promotional discount that opens in a new window after you make an online purchase, even from reliable websites, including Amazon, Etix, and Pizza Hut. You may think you are getting a discount from the web site you just made the purchase from. However, the BBB says the discount is really from a third-party marketing firm that pays a commission to sites for each consumer they enroll in the program through the sites.
The pop-ups are known as post transaction marketing and are technically legal, but deceptive and even harmful to consumers.
