The Halifax County Sheriff's Office says a person claiming to be with the IRS left a message on someone's voicemail, with a reference number, saying to call the IRS back at (800) 829-7650. When the person called the number back, the woman on the phone said she worked for the IRS and asked for the reference number. When the potential victim repeated the number, the so-called IRS agent said the number should have been twelve numbers long, which is not what was on the voicemail. Then the phony agent then asked for their social security number. When the potential victim resisted, the woman said the IRS was calling because the person had not responded to notifications by mail. In the end, the potential victim did not fall for the scam.
The Halifax County Sheriff's Office reminds you that the IRS does not call people on the phone.
