A WITN viewer from Plymouth contacted us about a scam she ran into this week. Nancy Conner said she answered an ad for free Yorkshire Terrier puppies in the News and Observer classified ads.

The owner of the puppies said his family just moved to Africa for missionary work, and he wanted the dogs to have a good home. He sent pictures of two Yorkshire Terrier pups, just as the ad said. As the email exchanges continued, the owner said Nancy would have to split the shipping cost with him. Her charge would be $425, which he wanted her to wire to another person.

Nancy caught on this was a scam before she sent any money. Any time you're asked to wire money to a person you don't know, that's a red flag. Once you wire money, it's gone; there is no way to trace it or get it back. Puppy scams have been going around for a few years now.

I recently read the same ad and replied only to find the same info. They said I had to send $600.00 via western union. I too found out it was a scam and it needs to be stopped before someone does send their money.

i seen an add in the enterprise for 2 english bull dogs they also sent me 2 pictures of the puppies i fell in love with them, and i knew the risk but i did it anyway at first he told me it would cost me 400 but i told him i would pay 200 and the other after i received the puppies then this morning i was told that i need to pay the taxes on the puppies that the goverment would not ship them until i did so, so thats when i knew i was scamed, at first i thought it was on the up and up becuase he called me several times during the week and im sure calling from africa is not cheap, so i really belived it was true, so tall my fellow neighbors dont fall for the adds you see in the paper if its over seas, they do and will take your money, ive always belived in people to give the bennifit of doubt, but i have learned my lesson and its said that people like that makes you leary of others and that should not be that way, so now my guard is up for good

I received 5 of these emails today offering me a free Rottweiler puppy. All I had to do was pay for the airfare to ship her. I traced her email to Carlsbad CA. She has not returned my last email as of yet.
