Free Jewelry! Just Pay The Release Fee

A viewer from Greenville had us check out a potential scam for him. Dick Crouch says his wife received a blue postcard in the mail, titled "Article Release Notice," saying a company wanted to send her free jewelry. The card did not name a company, but it said to call a toll-free number to pay a storage release fee.

WITN called the toll-free number and got a recording about the jewelry, a pearl and diamond necklace, which is yours free by paying the storage release fee. The recording said you could only pay the $6.95 fee by credit card, namely Visa MasterCard or American Express.

We spoke to one of the operators, who said the company's name was Consumer Clearing House. He reiterated that you had to pay the storage release fee by credit card.

We were unable to find any working number for Consumer Clearing House to ask about this promotion.

Noelle Talley with the North Carolina Department of Justice says they don't recommend ever giving your credit card information to a company for something like this. The state has not received any complaints about this particular scenario, but says there have been times in the past where people thought they were paying $6.95, but ended up getting charged $695.
