Area Code Scam

The Better Business Bureau says watch out for what you dial. A scam is expanding to make you think you're calling long distance in the U.S., but you're really calling overseas.

The Better Business Bureau says there are three area codes to watch out for: 809, 876, and 284. The BBB says people get emails, phone calls, pages and regular mail, asking you to call a number with this area code for one reason or another. The calls go to the Caribbean or Central America, which means you are going to pay a lot for those phone calls.

The BBB says a lot of times when you respond to a message and call a number in the 809, 876, 284 area codes, you'll be put on hold. The longer you're on the line, the more you pay. Since the foreign phone company operates outside the U.S., you may have little legal recourse.

Beware of Caller ID Spoofing! This is a rapidly spreading “innovation”. In this favorite activity of high-tech geeks & dishonest people, users simply give a spoofing service the number they want to call, as well as a fake number & sometimes name or a number that is no longer inservice that they want to appear on the target’s Caller ID, and the service places the misleading info into the Caller ID system. I have had several calls recently. Today, the caller ID showed that it was "EMBARQ. When transferred to the next available person, she asked for my phone # which was a dead giveaway(EMBARQ should have known my #). I hung up & I called the local number that was listed on the caller ID w/the EMBARQ name. The message that came on said the number was disconnected. Other calls have come from active local numbers concerning Dish TV service. I called those numbers & talked w/the persons that lived there & they knew nothing about the calls. PLEASE, beware of these types of calls.
