Two viewers sent us emails in two days about a new scam.
DeeDee Glasscoff and Ruth-Ann Cook both forwarded us emails sent to their East Carolina University accounts, that appear to be from the email address firstname.lastname@example.org. The email says you owe $1,500 in taxes, which they want you to send via Western Union to Terry Hensley in Brooklyn, New York. The email says you have six days to submit the payment. It specifies that sending a payment by any method other than wire transfer will void the transaction and your right to a refund.
The red flags really start to go up when the phony IRS agent tells you to lie to the Western Union workers. The email says the Western Union worker won't let you wire money to the IRS, so you're supposed to lie and say it's for a friend or a family member.
The IRS does not contact people via email and does not specify you wire them money. This is a scam.
