A WITN viewer, Jerry from Aurora, forwarded us an email he received claiming to be from the IRS.
The email says from the last "annual calculations of your fiscal activity we have determined that you are eligible to receive a tax refund of $480.23." The email then asks to submit your tax return by clicking on a link provided in the email. The email also says refunds can be delayed for a number of reasons, perhaps giving the victim a false sense of security that their money really is on the way.
The IRS says, this is a scam. The IRS does not send e-mails to taxpayers to advise them of refunds or to request financial information.
Remember, just because the email says its from the IRS and appears to have an irs.Gov email address, does not mean its from the IRS. Hackers can manipulate that.
