Personal Data Thefts Soar

Personal Data is being compromised at record levels.

According to a new report by the Identity Theft Resource Center, more than 80 million records with personal information, like social security and credit card numbers, were either lost or stolen in 2007.

That's up almost 400 percent from 2006 when nearly 20 million records were lost or stolen.

The Identity Theft Resource Center says several large cases are to blame for 2007's record. Hackers broke into TJ Maxx and Marshalls computer systems and accessed at least 46 million customer records. Banks later sued and estimate the breach involved at least 94 million records.
