Viewer Shares Scam Attempt

Another WITN viewer says they were able to spot a scam early on thanks to reports on WITN News at Sunrise Scam Alert.

This woman says she was advertising a retail display case on Craigslist.com, which is a popular classified ads site. She received an email from a potential buyer who said they were "Katty Phillips" of New Bern.

Even though the price of the display case was $650, "Katty" sent our viewer three different money orders for $850 drawn from a Canadian bank. "Katty" told the viewer to deposit the money, then wire the extra money to a location in Benin. "Katty" said that money would be used to pay her workers in that African country.

Our scam-savvy viewer started ignoring "Katty," but the scam artist started sending email after email, proclaiming to be nervous since she had not heard from the seller who already had so much of her money. Our viewer emailed "Katty" that she wasn't falling for her scheme, and she has yet to receive another email from "Katty."
