Will Herman Cain Exit The Race?

He's still plotting an aggressive campaign schedule across several states, but Herman Cain also has begun to outline a possible exit strategy from the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

The former business executive, facing a woman's allegation of a 13-year extramarital affair, says a heavy emotional toll on his family - particularly his wife, Gloria, whom he has not seen since the charge surfaced - could force him to call it quits. The shift comes as a growing chorus of would-be allies suggests he is no longer a viable presidential contender, and Cain himself says fundraising has suffered.

Cain, a top-tier candidate just weeks ago, says he'll decide in the next "few days" whether to abandon his White House bid, but not before he meets with his wife, who's been at their suburban Atlanta home.

"Since I've been campaigning all week, I haven't had an opportunity to sit down with her and walk through this with my wife and my family. I will do that when I get back home on Friday," Cain told reporters gathered at his New Hampshire campaign headquarters Wednesday night. "I am not going to make a decision until after we talk face to face."

Cain said he had spoken to his wife only by phone since Monday, the day an Atlanta television station reported the woman's accusation. Since then, aides have packed his campaign schedule with stops in Ohio, New Hampshire, Tennessee, South Carolina and Georgia and prepared to launch a fresh round of TV ads in Iowa.

Cain sat down Thursday afternoon with the New Hampshire Union Leader, an influential conservative voice in the first-in-the-nation primary state. On the way into the building, he told reporters there would be nothing new to share until he finishes "a complete reassessment" in the coming days.

On Thursday evening the former pizza executive was set to deliver a business-focused speech at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesburo.

"There were some people who thought that I was finished," Cain said Wednesday night. "But I'm going to leave it with Yogi Berra's comment: `It ain't over till it's over.' And it ain't over yet."

Many Republican operatives believe Cain's bid is over whether he pulls the plug or not.

"I don't see how they walk away from the damage that's been done and emerge as a viable primary candidate," said Rick Wilson, a longtime GOP consultant based in Florida. "All these things about Herman Cain keep coming out drip, drip, drip, and they're not handling it well. And now conservative Republicans have another place to go: Newt Gingrich."

Dan McLagan, a veteran GOP strategist based in Atlanta, said Cain "is like a zombie at this point: He's dead but he does not appear to have noticed and has kept on walking."

"His support is all moving to Gingrich and, at some point, he's going to look back and see that he is grand marshal of a one-man parade," McLagan said.

Gingrich has been the beneficiary - in polls, at least - of Cain's slide in the month since it was disclosed that the National Restaurant Association paid settlements to two women who claimed Cain sexually harassed them while he was its president. A third woman told The Associated Press that Cain made inappropriate sexual advances but that she didn't file a complaint. A fourth woman also stepped forward to accuse Cain of groping her in a car in 1997.

Cain has denied wrongdoing in all cases.

Atlanta-area businesswoman Ginger White, 46, said her affair with Cain ended this year before he became a White House candidate. In an interview with an Atlanta TV station, she displayed records showing repeated cell phone calls and text messages with Cain.

Cain has denied any such affair, and in a letter addressed to "patriots and supporters" called her allegations "completely false" and labeled her "troubled." Cain's attorney, Lin Wood, has sent a letter to White's attorney requesting those cell phone records among other documents so Cain and his team can analyze their authenticity and content.

"It's very disappointing that he would call me troubled and, you know, it's unfortunate," White said Wednesday on ABC's "Good Morning America."

White's attorney, Edward Buckley, said Thursday that his client was trying to obtain additional cell phone records. He has not yet responded to the letter from Wood.

Senior Cain aides huddled privately this week to map out a strategy to get past the allegations.

They've dispatched top staffers to New Hampshire and Iowa in recent days to help strengthen Cain's efforts in early voting states. National political director Bo Harmon, for example, arrived in New Hampshire Wednesday and expects to spend most of his time there until the Granite State's Jan. 10 Republican primary.

But Cain has told his top supporters that his campaign must determine whether he will have the financial and grassroots support to move ahead.

"The day that this latest one hit, fundraising went way down," Cain said Wednesday. "As the week has gone on and this woman who has made these accusations has basically started to contradict herself, our fundraising has started to go back up. It's not up to the level where it was, but a lot of people are saying, you know what, they don't believe it."

Gloria told FOX News last month that the sexual harassment charges other women have leveled against her husband don't ring true because he "totally respects women." But a campaign worker stated that she was pressured to do the interview and won't defend her husband again against the Ginger White's story. "She doesn't want to be forced to do that again because she knows he's had girlfriends for many years," the source said. "She just looked the other way. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/12/02/herman-gloria-cains-probl_n_1125626.html

They convicted Cain on heresay. I have a problem with this since all this info doesn't add up to a conviction. Yes Cains wife knew about this other woman and the other charges, however, the other charges were baseless and better to pay off than fight in court. Example, I was laid off years ago from a company with a girl in another department. I knew she was not paid so I bought her and her son, a Christmas gift since I knew she couldn't afford it on unemployment...months went by. Then one day I hear in the metopolis of Washington NC that she broke up with me? See my point, only god can judge that one, I only gave her and her son a hug. So with Cain, same. The left has gone on the smear campaign on him while ignoring that Obama said he was in Asia, Hawaii, in England, the UK and 57 states later...he got the pass. Well he didn't get the OSOC pass. Next will be Gingrich who converted to catholic. Its smear defense for a lost cause.

I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt... until it was found out that his wife never knew about this woman. She never knew about a woman that you texted(sexted?) over SIXTY times in a month period? He is a Koch brother's lackey and mouth, nothing more, not they will give him a nice cushy job because he took the heat from Perry and Romney, who they really want in the Big House. HAH!

I don't care if Mr. Cain has a somewhat distant marriage. He lost any support I might have given him when he announced the 9-9-9 tax plan. Tax policy is not the stuff of elementary school lessons.

Herman Cain & the other GOP Candidates, who don't stand a chance will not drop out of the race UNTIL January! Why? Because if they are running in January, they get to receive millions in matching Federal Funds. In other words, those people who want to save Americans money, want to stay in the race long enough to bleed millions off of the federal government (ie. taxpayers). Yes, those folks are just in it now to cash in big time come January! And you'd thought they really cared about the country!

The world would be a better place if women let their men have something on the side. Its done in a lot of European countries and divorce rates are low!

Most cel phone bills contain a log of incoming and outgoing calls/texts. Not sure why Cain's attorney needs copies of her personal records as there is no official lawsuit allowing for discovery. His own cel records should show a mirror image of what she and her attorney have submitted. He can dance around the matter in the hope of confusing the issue all he wants but it doesn't paint a picture of the innocence he is claiming. He knew the story was going to break many hours before it did as he told CNN. That would have been a perfect time for him to call his wife and give her a head's up as opposed to as he said, "my wife heard about it on tv like everyone else". Shameful that he allowed that to happen to Mrs Cain who appears to be a very trusting and caring wife. Thirteen years of calls, visits and financial assistance undisclosed to one's spouse wouldn't work in most marriages.

How much it cost Karl Rove? That would be more accurate. The Dems would have waited until Cain was nominated to break this story. Use your head for once, Cain was getting to much support, their was no way Rove was going to let him be elected. He had to be stopped.

Big 'Sugar' Daddy CAIN pays for his women discretely and then discards them like common street walkers. How about those 'Family Values' Up next: The Great Big Fat White Dope in Newt Gingrich, the GOP's resident Pillar of Hypocrisy. America is such a big country so why only does the GOP bring forth Cro-Magnon men who belong in the scrap heap of human history and shameless shape-shifters like Mitt Romney? And why does the soul less Dick Morris on a daily basis crow about the exciting new blood in the party. Even "has been's" are rolling over in their grave asking is this the best that the Republican Party can do?
  • by Anonymous on Dec 1, 2011 at 06:37 PM
I don't believe a word of it and if Gloria does then I feel very sorry for her. You can only stand by your man for so long before the crap flying back at him finally hits you in your own face. This man actually thinks that Ms. White must have been offered a great deal of money to come out with this story. This goes right along with us hearing words like "Nazis and Communists" again which is only intended to instill fear in Americans. He needs to pack up his carnival and go home, though I am not sure how safe that destination might now be. Besides, we now have much bigger fish to contend with......the Newt! Talk about self-importance and another one who believes God called him to run for President. I am a bit confused about this point unless God thinks we need Co-Presidents. Newt actually believes that it was inevitable that he would take the lead and win the nomination; it is just a bit ahead of what he thought the timing would be! This from an ethically disgraced individual, both in his personal and professional life, and the only Speaker of the House who had to step down in disgrace and pay a $300,000 fine for ethics violations. Come on, folks! This should be fun! Bye Herman.
