The wife of former North Carolina House Speaker Jim Black has died at her suburban Charlotte home.
Mary Valentine of Heritage Funeral Home in Matthews confirmed that Betty Black died Tuesday at age 75. Black's attorney, Whit Powell, said she had Lou Gehrig's disease.
Jim Black was speaker of the House for eight years. He resigned from the House in 2007 the day before pleading guilty in federal court to a felony for taking money from chiropractors while pushing their agenda at the Legislature.
He served about three years in prison until his release last October. Officials previously moved him to a Georgia prison, where he could be closer to his wife.
The Blacks were married in 1956.
A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday at Matthews United Methodist Church.
