What Makes NC Different In Gay Marriage Debate?

Depending on whom you ask, North Carolina is either out of step with its neighbors or ahead of the pack when it comes to the issue of gay marriage.

From Texas to Virginia, the Tar Heel State is alone in the South for not having a constitutional prohibition on same-sex marriage. A question before voters on May 8 seeks to change that.

happened in North Carolina is because Democrats controlled the legislature until 2010 and didn't want such an amendment.

But opponents of the amendment say North Carolina has a history of going against prevailing political currents in the South, especially during the civil rights struggles of the 1960s. Charlotte, N.C., will host the Democratic National Convention in September.
