Voter ID Bill A Top Priority For McCrory, GOP

Republican Pat McCrory and legislative leaders pledged that if they were elected, they would undo vetoes issued by former Gov. Beverly Perdue that GOP lawmakers were unable to override.

Atop the list was her veto of a bill requiring voters to show photo identification to cast ballots in person.

McCrory is now governor, and Republicans have expanded their House and Senate majorities. But getting a voter ID bill to McCrory won't be simple. Some lawmakers insist on a tough photo ID requirement, while others are comfortable with documents without a photo. And similar requirements in other states have been blocked or delayed by lawsuits.

McCrory said last week he'd prefer a photo ID requirement. But he said he is willing to sign a bill that required another option, like a voter registration card.
