Thousands Rally To Support NC Marriage Amendment

The widow of the driving force behind a constitutional amendment on next month's ballot in North Carolina urged women at a pro-amendment rally to bring others to the polls to support traditional marriage.

Mary Frances Forrester spoke Friday at a rally for the amendment on the state government mall in downtown Raleigh. State Capitol Police estimated 3,000 people attended the event. Many conservative Christian churches and schools around the state bused participants.

Forrester was married to the late Gaston County Sen. Jim Forrester, who sought for years for legislators to consider a statewide referendum. The new Republican majority at the General Assembly agreed last September to put the amendment on the ballot.

The amendment says traditional marriage is the only domestic legal union recognized by the state.
